High School Expository Essay Prompts


1. Judgments

Think of a time that you made an assumption about someone and then found out later you were wrong. Write an essay about snap judgments: how are they useful, why do you make them and how can they be limiting or harmful?

2. Responsibility

Write an essay about the importance of responsibility. What responsibilities should people have at a young age? What are the benefits and drawbacks of being held responsible for something?

3. Goals

Write an essay outlining the next five years of your life. What are your educational, career and relationship goals?

4. Letter to Yourself

Write a letter to your future self. Describe the people, places and activities that are important to you now. Ask friends and families to write letters to you. Put them into an envelope with any keepsakes or reminders from this year. Put the envelope away and don't open it for 5-10 years.

5. Favorite Subject

What is your favorite subject in school? What makes it so enjoyable for you? What is your favorite activity or project that you've performed in that subject?
