High School Narrative Essay Prompts


1. Out of Character

Walt Whitman said, "Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large; I contain multitudes." Think of a time that you did something out of character that you thought you would never do. Write a narrative essay describing the event and the transformation of your character.

2. Peer Pressure

Think of a time that you felt peer pressure to do something you didn't want to do. Write a narrative essay detailing the event and what you decided to do.

3. Courage

Think of a time that it took courage to do something. It could be a performance, a confession, standing up to someone, a dangerous activity or a conversation you were afraid to have. Write a narrative essay detailing the event and what led up to it.

4. Historical Figure

What historical figure do you find the most inspiring? Write an essay about how the person's ideas or actions have shaped, changed or influenced you.

5. Time Management

Write an essay about the importance of time management. Consider the different obligations and activities in your life and the way that you structure your day to accommodate them all.
