1. Huckleberry Finn Tom Sawyer Prompt

Read Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. How does the figure of Tom change between the two books? How is he represented as a character versus as a satirical figure? Consider the changes in tone, setting, and point of view.

2. Literary Criticism Writing Prompt

Choose a Victorian novel to read (Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Moll Flanders, Wuthering Heights, etc.) Choose two literary criticisms to read up on (structuralism, postmodernism, feminist theory, deconstructionism, culturalism, etc.) Write an essay applying both criticisms to the piece and then discussing the results they produce. Where do they agree? Where do they disagree? What aspects of the novel does each criticism type focus on?
